The Mercedes GLA could be classed as an small SUV or a slightly raised Hatchback. The GLA has the same underpinnings as the Mercedes A Class and Mercedes CLA, both of which sit pretty low to the ground. Thanks in part to its increased suspension travel, however, the GLA rides much more comfortably than either the Mercedes CLA or A-Class, while some models also offer four-wheel drives. In fact, the GLA is very much a car that concentrates on comfort, rather than a sporty drive. The GLA rides very well and wind and road noise is kept to a minimum, making it a quiet and capable cruiser.

There are three engines to choose from in the standard model: two diesels and one petrol (there’s also the standard high-performance AMG GLA 45). The two diesels both come in the 2.1 litre engine and produce 134 and 174bhp respectively, while the GLA 250 petrol is a 2.0-litre turbo producing 208bhp. Both the more powerful diesel and the petrol are only available with Mercedes’ 4MATIC four-wheel-drive system, as well as the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The less powerful entry-level diesel, however, is only available with front-wheel drive, but it does retain the choice between dual-clutch or manual transmission.
